The Mystical Grapes

Flanders, circa 1500
Wool, silk, silver thread; tapestry weave
31 1⁄8 x 29 7⁄8 in (79 x 75.9 cm.)
Cleveland Museum of Art (1973.77)

This is essentially a Holy Family image, with St. Joseph on the left, Mary on the right, and the child Jesus squeezing grape juice into a chalice, an obvious allusion to the Eucharist. There is another tapestry from about the same year in the Netherlands in which St. Joseph is clean-shaven and offers Jesus grapes. In other images he usually has a beard.
